Royal Marines Exploring Ice Crevasses in Antarctica
Climbing through mysterious ice chambers, these figures are Royal Marines exploring the stunning beauty of Antarctica.
At first glance it’s difficult to tell if these commandoes are under water – instead they were making their way through a deep blue wilderness.
They are from the Royal Navy’s ice patrol ship HMS Protector, which has ventured further south than ever before during a delivery of vital supplies to a research station.Photographer: LA(Phot) Arron Hoare

Two Close Protection Unit members manhandle the 'principal' out of the vehicle during a simulated attack by insurgents.
The main role of the Close Protection Unit (CPU), based at Longmore Camp and part of the Royal Military Police, is to deliver provost support to Operations across all spectrums of conflict. Their training is progressive and demanding, and they're armed with a variety of weapons not normally seen on the parade square. 03 August 2012 Photographer: Richard Watt; Crown Copyright
