A fugitive who was mistakenly freed from jail reportedly shot at a task force that was tailing him at Chandler Fashion Center mall Wednesday, authorities said.

A short time later, there were reported shots fired inside a Baja Fresh restaurant across the street from the mall, and police say they believe it involves the same suspect, whom the U.S. Marshal's Office has identified as Daniel Perez. There's a standoff and negotiations with the suspect at the restaurant are ongoing, authorities said.

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Two hostages have been released and a man has been taken into custody, after a brief shootout with a fugitive task force outside of Chandler Fashion Center and a hostage situation at a Baja Fresh restaurant midday Wednesday.

Two female employees of Baja Fresh were released unharmed, and a man was apprehended about 2:40 p.m. He was holed up inside of a Baja Fresh restaurant for more than an hour.

The man taken into custody was thought to be Daniel Perez, who was mistakenly released from jail in mid-December -- but that is not the case. Earlier in the day, gunfire was exchanged between a suspect, identified as Daniel Perez, and an undercover task force. But now there are more questions than answers.

The hostage-taker is not Daniel Perez and has not yet been identified. Perez's whereabouts are unknown at this time -- and it's not clear if he was involved in the earlier scene at all.
