Small Arms; AKMSU (Russia);
Designed for Special and Airborne Forces. Designed on the base of AKMS. Operation and interaction of the parts and mechanisms are similar to the base model. ['Base model' = AKMS.]
The construction features a standing sight at the base of the gas chamber [gas block], in line with the shortened gas tube and gas piston.
The unique receiver cover is reinforced in the front to reduce pitching [I guess this is a reference to the hinged receiver cover latch] and features a permanently attached L-shaped iron sight.
The muzzle flash hider, which is screwed on to the barrel, has a unique surface intended to increase effective dispersal of the heat. The forearm has a unique shape and serves as an additional grip, with an opening made for the left-hand thumb.
Features:
Caliber, mm: 7.62
Unloaded weight, kg: 2.85
Length, mm;
-with folded butt: 480
-unfolded: 740
Barrel length, mm: 270
Muzzle velocity, m/s from 680 [I guess 'from' in this context means depending on the type of ammunition]
Cyclic rate of fire: 650 rpm
Effective rate of fire: 40-100 rpm
Magazine capacity: 30 rounds
Sighting range: 400 m.
The force of the 7,62*39 m/m round combined with the AKMSU's light mass, resulted in a significant increase in recoil momentum and muzzle climb, something which in turn dramatically reduced hit probabilities. This made even short bursts extremely inefficient. Effective fire could only be made by firing single shots, which initiated a debate about the whole combat effectiveness of the AKMSU.
Its very short barrel combined with the powerful 7,62 m/m round and the big heat-absorbing flash hider made it subject to frequent overheating, which in turn further reduced its combat effectiveness. The AKMSU was issued in very limited numbers on an experimental basis to Special Operations teams in the opening stages of the Soviet-Afghan war, but due to the above mentioned issues, the weapon was never issued on a full-scale basis, and was after a short period withdrawn from service and replaced with standard issue AKMS and later AKS-74-U rifles. In short, the AKMSU was just one of several altered Kalashnikova designs that were tested under combat conditions, but did not prove satisfactory enough to be issued on a bigger basis. As many other designs combat tested in Afghanistan at the time, the AKMSU failed to meet the standards set by the Soviet High Command and was therefore never officially adopted as part of the standard army inventory. Later instead the High Command adopted the 5,45 m/m AKS-74-U on the basis of the AKS-74 to fill the role for which AKMSU was intended. Today the AKMSU is listed in the Russian Ministry of Defence's journals as a weapon "that saw limited service use for experimental purposes".
The AKMSU was made to be used with the following types of 7,62*39 m/m ammunition: Ordinary steel core, subsonic, T-45 tracers, incendiary, armor-piercing and armor-piercing/incendiary.
