-La reverse flag è stata usata fin dall'era post-vietnam per indicare le truppe dispiegate all'estero in teatri operativi.
Generalmente non veniva indossata durante le operazioni di combattimento, per questioni di visibilità=sicurezza.
A Grenada (1983) non ricordo unità dell'esercito con flags, mentre di sicuro venivano indossate dai Marines, come già facevano in Libano (generalmente flag non reverse con bordo bianco su braccio sx, e raramente qualche flag con bordo giallo)
A Panama (1989), durante i combattimenti ricordo le fasce bianche sul braccio per distinguersi dai panamensi, e le poche flag che si vedevano erano esclusivamente non reverse portate a dx, appuntate all'uniforme tramite spille di sicurezza.
Durante i combattimenti della prima guerra del golfo le bandiere si sono viste molto rarmente. Quelle poche che si sono viste erano sia reverse con bordo giallo che non reverse con bordo giallo indossate solo sulla manica dx.
In Somalia in genere veniva indossata la reverse flag a dx, così come ad Haiti e in Bosnia (era già così da regolamento).
E' solo dal 1 Luglio 2002 che sull'Army Regulation 670–1 "Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia" viene inserita la regolamentazione della bandiera reverse. Ecco il testo in inglese:
28–18. Wear of full-color U.S. flag cloth replica
a. General. During joint or multi-nation operations, soldiers are authorized to wear the full-color U.S. flag cloth
replica on utility and organizational uniforms. Wear of the full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is at the discretion of the
organizational commander, when the distinguishing of individual national soldiers is desired, and overrides the tactical
consideration of full-color insignia on uniforms. During joint operations, the joint commander normally will prescribe
the policy for wear. Soldiers are not authorized to wear the full-color U.S. flag cloth replica upon their return to home
station.
b. Description. Chapter 1, Title 4, United States Code, provides for the design of the U.S. flag and specifies the
colors as red, white, and blue. Colors other than red, white, and blue violate the U.S. Code; therefore, subdued-colored
flags are not authorized for wear. The size of the full-color cloth U.S. flag replica is approximately 2 inches by 3
inches.
c. How worn.
(1) When approved for wear, the full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is sewn 1⁄2 inch below the right shoulder seam of
the temperate, hot-weather, enhanced hot-weather, and desert BDU; the BDU field jacket; and the cold-weather
uniform (see fig 28–135). If the SSI–FWTS is worn on the right shoulder of the utility uniform, the full-color U.S. flag
cloth replica is placed 1⁄8 inch below the right shoulder sleeve insignia (see fig 28–136). The SSI–FWTS is not
authorized for wear on organizational uniforms, unless indicated above.
(2) The full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is worn so that the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right. When
worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer’s right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the
wearer moves forward. The appropriate replica for the right shoulder sleeve is identified as the reverse side flag.
In febbraio 2004 l'Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Schoomaker approvò la bandiera reverse per tutte le uniformi di tutti i soldati dell'esercito senza distinzione dello stato di dispiegamento.
Il testo dell'Army Regulation 670–1 del 3 Febbraio 2005 venne così modificato:
28–18. Wear of full-color U.S. flag cloth replica
a. General. All soldiers throughout the Force, regardless of deployment status, will wear the full-color U.S. flag
cloth replica on utility and organizational uniforms.
b. Description. The colors of the U.S. flag cloth replica are red, white, and blue. The size is approximately 2 inches
by 3 inches.
c. How worn.
(1) When approved for wear, the full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is sewn 1⁄2 inch below the right shoulder seam of
the temperate, hot-weather, enhanced hot-weather, and desert BDU; the BDU field jacket; and the cold-weather
uniform (see fig 28–135). If the SSI–FWTS is worn on the right shoulder of the utility uniform, the full-color U.S. flag

Quindi la patch reverse è autorizzata per le operazioni multi-nazionaali e le joint operations da circa il 1991 (salvo documento ufficiale che indichi altra data), mentre tutti i soldati appartenenti all'esercito, in qualsiasi circostanza, devono portare la bandiera reverse sulla spalla dx delle loro utility uniforms dal 1° ottobre 2005. Questo a ricordare che l'esercito è impegnato in guerra sia in patria che all'estero.
Casi particolari:
Le unità americane della Multinational Force & Observers (MFO) che indossavano la flag non reverse sul braccio sx sotto la SSI.
Le unità Americane in servizio ONU indossavano la bandiera non reverse sul braccio sx sotto la SSI.
Anche le unità del SETAF di Vicenza in passato avevano una bandierina (più piccola della 2x3) sulla manica sx (ho visto diverse giacche tropical OG-107 patchate così).
Nel 2003, durante la guerra in Iraq, le unità del 173° fecero un lancio di guerra arrivando direttamente dall'Italia e indossavano la flag 2x3 a sx, sotto l'SSI (poi dovettero spostare la bandiera al posto giusto)
